Shape-shifting escape in India, armpit hair scam, theater crowd gets violent
Welcome to Oddacity News, your source for the weird, unusual and offbeat news of the world.
Emerald Isle: A woman in Ireland took to Instagram to explain how she got flourescent green eyes from a routine optical exam. Magarita Wargola said a technician failed to ask her if she was wearing contacts before applying a contrast dye in her eyes. Her eyes immediately turned bright green. “We both panicked,” she said. Despite many attempts to clean them, the contacts were permanently stained, but her eyes were not harmed. Wargola said she might use the contacts on St. Patrick’s Day.
Ew: A diner at an Australian restaurant was caught on camera pulling out his own armpit hair and placing it on his plate to avoid paying a large bill, reports 7News.com.au. The man who planted the hair was part of a family that ran up a US$422 bill. He blamed the restaurant for the hair in his food — even though the hair was blonde, and no blondes worked in the kitchen — then refused to pay. “I’ve never seen this ever before,” the chef said. “This was another level of trying to scam.”
Provocative: An actor at a German theater was attacked on stage by audience members who apparently found his performance as a far-right extremist as too real, reports The Guardian. Theater-goers heckled and whistled at actor Ole Lagerpusch, someone threw an orange, then some tried to hit him and drag him off the stage. A local reviewer wrote: “Parts of the Bochum audience, which one would have thought to be among the most theatre-savvy in the country, are apparently too stupid, to put it bluntly, to distinguish between fiction and reality.”
Buckle up: An Australian family whose car was stolen during a home invasion robbery have been fined over US$4,400 because one of the thieves failed to wear his seatbelt while driving the vehicle, reports Nine.com.au. The couple told police that masked thieves had invaded their house twice in one night, eventually taking their car. A camera later caught the driver of the stolen vehicle without a seatbelt and sent a fine notice to the owners. Said the father of the family: "How is it the cameras can get us with a fine, but they can't capture the rego (registration) and stop the thieves driving the car?"
Busted: Police in Thailand disguised themselves as dragon dancers during lunar new year’s festivities to arrest a man suspected of stealing Buddhist artifacts, reports The Telegraph. By dressing in a red lion costume, officers were able to get close to the suspect and tackle him and make the arrest. The man is accused of stealing two 12-inch Buddha statues, from a senior officer’s home during a break-in.
Slither out: A 25-year-old woman in India, trying to avoid an arranged marriage, vanished from her home, leaving behind clues that suggested she had turned into a snake, reports Hindustan Times. When family members found a shed snake skin on her bed, her village became convinced she had transformed into a “nagin,” or a shape-shifting serpent goddess in Indian folklore. In fact, she had eloped with another man. Said police: “We are looking for a person, not a serpent.”
