Viking weapon: A 6-year-old Norwegian boy discovered a 1,300-year-old sword sticking out of the ground on a class trip, reports Norwegian news agency NRK. “This part stuck out!” said the boy, Henrik Refsnes Mørtvedt. “It was rust and dirt. So I thought I would pick it up and see what it was.” Archaeologists examined the sword, determined that it dates from the age of the Vikings and sent it to the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo.
It’s not easy being green: An Australian man who found a live frog in a sealed bag of lettuce said his housemates didn’t believe him, reports AP. “He’s like, ‘Oh Bro, there’s a frog in the lettuce.’ And we’re like, ‘No, you’re taking the mick, like that’s not real,’” said housemate Laura Jones. But then they saw the amphibian inside the bag (see video). The group nicknamed the frog “Greg” before releasing it into a nearby pond.
Don’t touch: Even though it has been sold, a pickup truck at a Ford dealership in Kansas cannot be moved — because baby birds are in a nest on one of its tires. Olathe Ford Lincoln said on Facebook that a mother robin constructed the nest on the F-250 truck tire, laid four “beautiful blue eggs,” and is now nurturing her newborn babies. The inhabited nest is federally protected, so the truck has to stay put for now. “This may be the only F-250 in America currently protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act,” the dealership said.
No place to lie: A German tourist won a court judgment because he was unable to find an available lounge chair at the Greek resort where his family was vacationing, reports the BBC. The man complained that even when he arose at 6 a.m., all the chairs had been “reserved” with towels placed there by other guests. The man said his children had to lie on the ground. A German court awarded him 900 euros (US$1,043).
Fail: A new book about artificial intelligence’s erosion of truth contains numerous fake or misattributed quotes made up by AI, reports The New York Times. “The Future of Truth” by Steven Rosenbaum has drawn widespread attention for exploring how facts and reality are “being bent, blurred, and synthesized” by AI. One person who is falsely quoted in the book said not only is the quote fake, “I also sound like I have a stick up my butt.”
More Norwegian boy adventures: A 14-year-old boy in Norway stole a bus for the third time in sixth months, reports NRK. Earlier this year, the same boy stole a bus in Norway and drove it Sweden. In November, he stole a bus and drove it for three hours. During this week’s heist, he posted a video of himself driving the bus online. A police official said: “As with previous cases, we take it very seriously that a boy at such a young age steals a bus.”
